If nearby places, Discover, Shop, or check-in location look wrong, use Troubleshoot Location. It shows what Untappd thinks your location is and whether the app has permission. Open Settings (the gear icon at the top right of Discover, or on your profile; not on Community) > Location > Troubleshoot Location.
Check your location
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location (under App Settings).
- Tap Troubleshoot Location.
- You'll see a map with a pin, then We have your location as followed by the latitude and longitude Untappd is using.
Read the status
One of these appears under the coordinates:
- Green check: Location permissions granted
- Red alert: "You have denied Untappd's access to your location, so we are using your IP address to estimate it."
- Red alert: "We were unable to get your location, so we are using your IP address to estimate it."
IP estimate is a rough fallback. Nearby results and Discover can be off until device location is allowed.
Fix permission in device settings
- On Troubleshoot Location, tap Open device settings.
- In your phone's Untappd settings, allow location access (While Using the App, or the equivalent on your OS).
- Return to Untappd. The diagnostic refreshes when the app comes back to the foreground.
- You'll see the status update if permission changed.
Good to know
- Distance Defaults on the same Location screen (Find Drink and Discover Tab) control how far nearby search looks. They do not grant GPS permission.
- To browse Discover as if you were in another city, use the location pill on Discover (see Customize Your Discover Tab). That is separate from device GPS.
Don't see it?
- Don't see Troubleshoot Location? Open Settings from the gear on Discover or on your profile (not Community), then Location.
- Don't see coordinates update after changing OS permission? Leave Untappd and reopen it, or switch away and back so the screen can refresh.
- Still on IP fallback after allowing location? Confirm Untappd has location set to allow while using the app, and that system Location Services (or Android location) is on for the phone.
