If Untappd closes or jumps back to the start when you open Camera or Gallery for a check-in photo, the phone likely closed Untappd in the background to free memory. That is most common on Android, and with large photos.
This is not a missing Untappd setting. Work through the steps below in order.
Why it happens
When you add a photo on Android, Untappd opens your phone's Camera or Gallery. The phone can close Untappd while that other app is open. When you come back, Untappd starts again and the photo is gone.
What to try
- If your phone asks which app to use after you tap Photo Gallery, pick the built-in Gallery or Photos app. Do not use a third-party photo picker.
- In your phone's Camera app, lower the photo resolution or quality, then try a smaller photo.
- Close other apps, restart the phone, then open Untappd by itself and add a photo again.
- Update Untappd from the App Store or Play Store, then retry.
- Uninstall Untappd, then reinstall it from the App Store or Play Store.
Start a check-in with the yellow Check-in button (the round + at the bottom right of Discover and Community), then add a photo. You should return to the check-in screen with the photo attached.
If Camera or Gallery will not open
That is likely a permissions issue. Open Settings (the gear icon at the top right of Discover, or on your profile) > Camera > Open device settings, allow Camera, then return to Untappd and try again.
- On iPhone, also allow Photos.
- On Android 12 or older, also allow Photos or Storage.
- Android 13 and newer don't need a photo permission.
Good to know
- There is no Enhanced Camera setting. Older help articles that mention it are out of date.
- On Android, you may see a Camera "Please wait" notification while the camera is open. That's normal. Don't swipe it away or force-close Untappd.
- A photo is optional. You can confirm a check-in without one.
- Profile and cover photos use Edit Profile, not this check-in handoff. If only those fail, see Add a Profile Picture or Cover Photo.
- Use photo cropper and save photos to your device via Settings > Camera. The Cropper crops after you pick a photo; save-to-device keeps a copy in your gallery.
Don't see it?
- Don't see Camera in Settings? Use the gear on Discover or your profile (not on Community). Camera is hidden if you're using Untappd without an account — sign up first.
- Still restarting after a reinstall? Contact Support from Settings > Help > Contact Support with your phone model and OS version.
