There are a few different places you'll see ratings on Untappd, including drink and producer pages, and the Top Rated Drinks and Top Rated Producers sections on Discover. This guide explains what ratings are displayed where, how they are calculated, and answers common questions.
Drink
The Drink Pure Average is the rating shown on a drink's page, in search results, lists, and similar contexts. It is calculated as the pure average of the drink's user ratings. On the drink page that's the Global row (Yours / Friends / Global).

Producer
The Producer Average is the rating shown on a producer's page and map. It is calculated as a weighted average across the producer's drinks, as displayed below.

Drinks
A drink must have 150 ratings to qualify for the Top Rated list.
Local
This rating appears under Top Rated Drinks on Discover for your selected location. Tap the location chip (for example, Boston, MA) to change it. It is calculated by a Bayesian Average of drinks checked in within the last 15 days in the selected search radius, to highlight what's trending and available locally.
Global
This rating appears on the full Top Rated Drinks list when the location is set to Global. To see it, tap Top Rated Drinks on Discover, then tap the location chip and choose Global (All Locations). It is calculated by a Bayesian Average of all drinks.

Producers
To qualify for the Top Rated list, a producer needs:
- at least 1,000 ratings
- at least 5 in production drinks on its producer page
- a physical address tied to the producer page (for the Local list only)
Local
Appears under Top Rated Producers on Discover for your selected location (location chip). Calculated by the weighted formula below and shows producers within the search radius.
Global
Appears on the full Top Rated Producers list when the location is set to Global. To see it, tap Top Rated Producers on Discover, then tap the location chip and choose Global (All Locations). Calculated by the weighted formula below.

I don't understand what a Bayesian Average is even after reading the Wikipedia article. Could you explain more?
A Bayesian Average is a common way to rank items by rating. Instead of using a drink’s raw average on its own, it blends that average with the overall average across all drinks. When a drink only has a few ratings, its score stays close to the overall average. As it collects more ratings, its own average counts for more. This keeps a drink with a handful of 5-cap ratings from jumping straight to the top, and it keeps a drink with a couple of 1-cap ratings from being unfairly buried. This is a simplification, but it’s easier to picture than the full formula.
How many ratings does a drink need before the rating will show?
A drink needs at least 10 ratings before the rating will show. Remember, a check-in and a rating are not the same thing.
Why isn't this producer showing on the Top Rated pages?
A producer needs at least 1,000 ratings and at least 5 drinks on the producer page to qualify. To appear on the Local list, it also needs a physical address on its producer page. Remember, a check-in and a rating are not the same thing.

How often do Top Rated lists refresh?
Top Rated refreshes every 24 hours.
How often do drink or producer pages refresh?
Drink and producer page ratings refresh every 24-48 hours.
If I rated a drink multiple times, how is that rating determined?
When you rate a drink more than once, your ratings are averaged together and applied as your single rating for that drink.
What happens to my rating if I delete my check-in?
If it's your only check-in to that drink, your rating will be removed. If you have multiple check-ins to that drink, your rating for that drink will persist but will no longer include the rating from the deleted check-in.
If I don't rate a drink, does it count as a 0-cap rating?
No. If you leave the rating blank, it does not count toward the drink's total.
