Untappd currently supports the following Brand types. These categories are part of our legacy taxonomy and mostly apply to the legacy version of Untappd. As the platform expands to support more Drink categories, we will update and upload revised types and descriptions over time so they better reflect the broader Drinks ecosystem.
Macro
A Brand with an annual Drink production of over 6,000,000 barrels (7,040,865 hectoliters) or a Brand owned by another Brand with annual Drink production of over 6,000,000 barrels (7,040,865 hectoliters).
Regional
A regional Brand with a majority of volume in “traditional” or “innovative” Drinks, with an annual production between 15,000 barrels (17,600 hectoliters) and 6,000,000 barrels (7,040,865 hectoliters).
Micro
A Brand with annual production volume between 2,000 barrels (2,300 hectoliters) and 15,000 barrels (17,600 hectoliters).
Nano
A Brand with annual production volume of 2,000 barrels (2,300 hectoliters) or less.
Brewpub
A Brand where the majority of Drinks produced are primarily for sale in the on‑premise restaurant or bar at the Place.
Contract
Any business or Brand that does not have its own physical production facility and hires another Brand or facility to make its Drinks.
Homebrewery
A Brand that makes approved Drinks (beer, cider, mead, kombucha, etc.) for non‑commercial consumption at home.
Cidery
A business where the majority of the product is cider.
Meadery
A business where the majority of the product is mead.
Bar/Restaurant/Store
A Place (that customers can visit) that does not physically produce Drinks on premise, but contracts other Brands or facilities to make specific Drinks for their Brand. Similar to a Contract arrangement, but not branded as a brewery, and with at least one physical Place that sells their Drinks.
Note: These Brand types are legacy and primarily map to the original Untappd taxonomy. As Untappd’s support for additional drink categories grows, we will publish updated guidance and migrate examples over time.
