All UTFB websites by default are assigned a domain name in the format of ‘yourbusinessname.ourmenu.com.’ However, if you own your domain name, you can set your UTFB Website to use that name instead.
In order to set up your UTFB Website to operate under your custom domain, you’ll need the following:
- A domain name that you own
- The login information for your account with your domain provider
- A published UTFB Website (Get tips for setting up your UTFB Website by clicking here and here)
- If you are going to use your own domain name, you don’t have to worry about overwriting your current site when publishing in UTFB Websites because the initial publish in UTFB is to the ‘ourmenus’ domain.
To get started, open the website builder and in the menu bar on the left, go to SEO & SETTINGS > Site Domain and click the Change Site URL button:
Add the custom domain name in the domain field and click the Continue button. The system will then analyze your domain to determine whether it can automatically update your DNS settings:
What is DNS?
- DNS stands for Domain Name System. DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, which allows users to access websites using domain names like "www.google.com" instead of IP addresses like "192.0.2.44."
- When you enter a domain name into your browser, it requests the IP address for that domain name from a DNS server. The DNS server returns the IP address. Your browser then uses the IP address to load the requested page.
When you click the Continue button, you will be asked to log into your domain provider account (GoDaddy used here as an example - depending on your provider, screens shown after the login may be slightly different):
If your DNS provider is detected, you will be asked to log in with your provider account email address and password:
Now, domain setup begins:
After a moment, you’ll see final confirmation of your domain name’s configuration. Click the Done button to return to the UTFB Websites page.
If your domain provider isn’t found by the DNS configurator, you’ll need to set it up manually. From the detection screen, log into your domain account and navigate to your provider’s DNS control panel where you will find the DNS editing options.
You’ll need to do two things:
- Create a new CNAME record with the following settings:
- Host/Alias: www
- Destination/Target: s.multiscreensite.com
- Point the root of your domain (domain.com) to your website. To do this, create two A records with the following settings:
- First:
- Host/Alias: @
- Destination/Target: 35.172.94.1
- Second:
- Host/Alias: @
- Destination/Target: 100.24.208.97
- First:
Note: If you see any @ records pointing to any other destination/target, please delete them.
It can take up to 24 hours but likely no more than 10-15 minutes or less to populate your new IP globally. You must wait until the IP address is ready before dealing with the SSL certification of your site.
What is an SSL certificate?
- An SSL certificate is what enables data encryption between a website and people who visit it. This is important to assure users that the website is safe to visit. If you have configured DNS properly, the SSL certificate should be automatically generated as soon as those settings have fully populated across global DNS servers (which can take up to 48 hours).
- You can check that the certificate has begun generating in the UTFB Websites editor by going to the menu bar on the left and clicking SEO & Settings > Site SSL. A green check mark means that it is generating or has been generated. After a certificate is generated, it can take 2-3 hours for a browser to recognize and use the certificate.
- If your certificate has NOT been generated, it's likely that there is an issue with the domain's DNS settings. To avoid your site being labeled as ‘not secure,’ ‘blocked,’ or ‘forbidden,’ please let us know so that we can troubleshoot for you.
