Why does Untappd crash on my HTC M8?

Recently, you have been experience crashing when you open Untappd on your HTC M8 device. What gives?

Sadly, this due to a bug with the Android System Webview that was pushed out by Google via the Google Play (on Wednesday the week of April 20th, 2015). This affects all HTC M8 devices with at least Android 5.0 and it affects other apps as well. The symptoms of this bug basically crash a majority of apps before they even star tup.

Unfortunately - we can't fix the problem until Google rolls an update for this Android System WebView, but we do have a work around listed below:

Step 0: You first need to disable auto-updating of the Android System Webview. In Android 5.x you can just find the “Android System WebView” app in the Play Store, then tap on the three dots in the upper right and make sure “Auto-update” is unchecked. This won’t change your global settings.

  1. Go to your Settings (Phone)
  2. Open Apps
  3. Open Android System Webview (should be one of the first ones listed) and It should read 42.0.x
  4. Click Uninstall Updates

By clicking Uninstall Updates, it will downgrade this a lower version (the last stable version). Once you do this, you should have no issues with using Untappd.
