"Raise Your Pints supporters,

We did it.

As I'm sure most of you know by now, we received word this morning that Governor Phil Bryant signed SB2878, the bill raising the permissible alcohol content in beer from 5% ABW to 8% ABW.  This will give MS an effective cap of about 10% ABV.  The new law will go into effect on July 1st of this year.  Please take a moment to thank the Governor if you get the chance.  This was probably not the easiest decision for him but he stepped up and did the right thing for the state of MS.

I'd like to address a few of the common questions and concerns we've been getting.  All this new law will do is raise the permissible cap on beer.  So the beer that is currently sold in MS will not change in any way.  Nor will the venues where it is bought and sold change.  Wherever you bought beer before, you'll buy beer in the future.  You'll just have more options on what beer to buy.  Unlike Alabama, we have no container size restriction, so we can get singles, 22 once "bombers" or packaged half-gallon "growlers."

As for what new beers we'll see in MS and when, that's a tough one to know for sure.  The first new beers you'll see will be the high gravity offerings from breweries that already do business in MS.  I've heard that Sierra Nevada will bring in Torpedo and Bigfoot and Abita wants to bring in Andygator and Jockamo.  And we know Rogue is very anxious to get their higher gravity beers to us!  Look for something really special from Lazy Magnolia!  As for new breweries expanding into MS, that process is going to move slower.  As it should.  We will get more breweries entering Mississippi markets but at steady sustainable rate.  But what I'm most excited about is the introduction of several new native Mississippi breweries that should be opening in our state in the near future.  I fully expect that by this time next year, we'll have at least a couple more Mississippi breweries to enjoy.

We'll have a more detailed update coming out soon.  So in the meantime, raise a pint to celebrate this major accomplishment.  It's thanks to people like you who stepped up to support RYP that this was possible.  Oh, and please remember to enjoy these high gravity beers responsibly.  I've spent the last three years going around this state telling everyone that the negative things they were worrying about won't happen here in MS because they never happened in the other 49 states that have already raised or removed their caps.  Don't make a liar out of me.

Mississippi, we Raised Your Pints!

PLEASE make a badge celebrating this! Perhaps any beer from Lazy Magnolia or the soon to be Lucky Town Brewery?

    Steve,

We can think about this for the future - however it would great to get some breweries in Mississippi to get in on it! If you can get them to contact us at INFO at UNTAPPD dot COM. Cheers and congratulations!
